Local Dog Training in New York City & Long Island
At Total K9 Coaching, we understand that every dog is unique, and so is every owner. That’s why we customize our training approach to accommodate all breeds, personalities, and goals. We believe the best training outcomes come from building strong, personal relationships with both our canine clients and their humans.
We stand behind our training every step of the way. You’ll receive regular updates during your dog’s stay, personalized coaching when your dog returns home, and continued support long after the program ends.
No issue is too big or too small. Whether you need help with puppy training, potty training, basic obedience, behavior modification, boarding, or personal protection, we’re here to help you and your dog succeed.
I have been training professionally since becoming an Accredited Pet Trainer in 2008. I have successfully been in business for 10 years, as well as managed and trained over 30 other trainers for another company in between. I also own a successful pet sitting and dog walking company in North Carolina. After moving to New York in 2023, I decided to relocate my business and share my knowledge with others in this area.
Before my training career, I participated in dog shows through 4-H and FFA. I have judged several dog obedience events, as well as being a participant myself. I am a balanced trainer who uses informed methods for each dog/case. I always keep an open mind when evaluating a dog and am always happy to share my knowledge with clients and colleagues.
I have experience working with therapy dogs, service dogs, obedience events, and protection sports. I also had the honor of training a mobility/PTSD service dog for ex-NFL player Brian Schaeffering.
My name is Donald Opanhoske, and I’ve been professionally training dogs since 2001. With over two decades of hands-on experience, I’ve dedicated my career to understanding canine behavior and helping dogs and their owners build strong, respectful relationships.
Throughout my journey, I’ve earned certifications from some of the most respected dog training schools in the world, continuously expanding my knowledge and refining my craft. I actively compete in both obedience and protection sports, which keeps my skills sharp and my training methods current.
As a balanced dog trainer, I believe there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every dog is different—and so is every human. That’s why I create personalized training plans tailored to each dog’s temperament, behavior, and the goals of their owner. Whether you’re dealing with basic obedience, behavioral challenges, or preparing for competitive work, I bring a thoughtful, practical, and results-driven approach to every case.
My mission is simple: to help dogs and their people thrive together.
FAQs
Dog training is our full-time career, passion, and your dedicated lifestyle. We have dedicated years to our business and furthering our own training to be most effective for the dogs and their owners. Big-box trainers often have less focused experience and provide less individualized training for your dog and its unique personality. While these classes can be a fun and casual foundation, they are not typically effective long-term.
